A General Document is in effect an item of Correspondence. Correspondence is anything that is written down and sent from one party to another. Thus it includes the following:

  • Letters
  • Information on Forms
  • Fax or Facsimile
  • Telex [if anyone is still using this technology]
  • Email
A Letter can be sent by Email. So there is a need to differentiate between the description of the content, and the mode by which it is sent. The term "Email" refers to not only how it was sent [by email], but also as a document [an email]. The same is true of Fax and Telex.

A "Form" is a set of structured information - the boxes define the information requested, and whether or not it is mandatory or optional. A Letter is thus often a set of "unstructured" information. However within the CEMDC environment, in fact it is just another form.
